Moylegrove Highlights
Moylegrove boasts one of the best kept secrets along this particular stretch of coastal path. Whilst arguably Ceibwr Bay, the pebbled cove half a mile from the village is in itself a perfect spot for all those in search of a little piece of tranquillity – it’s the hidden gem just south along the coastal path towards Newport. Pwll y Wrach or more well known as the Witches Cauldron is a sunken sea cave that has created a deep blue inlet which can only be accessed by kayak or by foot along the coast path. At certain times of the day the sunlight streaming through the cave entrance gives the appearance of brilliant emerald green waters. There are excellent walking routes from Moylegrove, either head south towards Newport on the coastal path (but be warned, this is known as the most strenuous stretch of the entire Welsh Coastal Path) or north around Cemaes Head to St Dogmaels.
Apart from the stunning natural scenery, Moylegrove is perhaps most well known for its garden centre. Penrallt Garden Centre draws people from miles around, partly due to the impressive collection of plants, trees, shrubs and all things green fingered, but also for the wonderful café and children's playground.
History
The name of Moylegrove is said to date back to 1291, possibly originating from an early reference to Moylegrove Church as “Ecclesia de Grans Matildas” – “The Church of Matildas Grove”. Matilda was married to Robert Fitzmartin and gave part of her dowry to St Dogmaels Abbey.
