History
St Dogmaels has been a settlement since Norman times. In the 12th Century Robert Fitz-Martin and his wife Maud Peverel founded the Priory for just 12 monks, which was soon after raised in status to an abbey. St Dogmaels is best known for the abbey, but it was also a very important fishing village in the 18th and 19th Century where herring was fished on the River Teifi.

Poppit Sands Beach
A wonderful sandy Blue Flag beach flanked by sand dunes. At high tide there is still plenty of beach to explore, but at low tide the expanse of sand almost reaches to Gwbert on the other side of the bay. Don’t be temped to try and cross though, the currents are too strong. The tide changes fast and it’s easy to become cut off. The beach has Blue Flag status, and has life guard provisions in the summer months.
Poppit is a dog friendly beach but restrictions apply to the western end of the beach between 1st May and 30th September. Check out the map at the beach entrance to help with which section of the beach it applies to.
Poppit beach is popular for surfing, swimming, paddleboarding, & kayaking. It hosts an RNLI lifeboat station and has a small RNLI shop on site.
The beach car park is large and has an overflow car park available during busy periods. There is disabled access to the beach from the car park. Public toilets and an outside tap for dog water or cleaning off sand is also available.
The delicious beach side offering from the famous Crwst bakery can be found at the beach, offering all kinds of delicious baked goods and ice creams.
