Poppit Sands Beach Pembrokeshire

Getting to Poppit Beach

Poppit beach is just 2 miles down the river from St Dogmaels, the most northerly coastal village in Pembrokeshire, and just the other side of the river from Cardigan Town, in south Ceredigion. Traveling north from Pembrokeshire, head towards Cardigan on the A487 and take the left turn to St Dogmaels, if you cross the old town bridge and pass Cardigan Castle, you’ve gone too far, in this case just follow the one way system all the way around Cardigan and cross back over the bridge. Travel through St Dogmaels, being patient in the couple of narrow sections, past the moorings and follow the river all the way down to Poppit. If you are walking from Cardigan, follow the same route, but just after the Fiat BV Rees Garage, turn right onto the river footpath, this will lead you through to the moorings, just above the Ferry Inn (a great riverside pub), and avoids you having to navigate narrow and sometimes congested streets. From here you follow the road all the way down to Poppit Sands Beach car park. If you don’t need the facilities at Poppit, you can pop onto the beach just after the Waterside Hotel, look for the little paths that take you through to the beach front. You can then walk across the beach or through the sand dune paths to the Café. There is also the option of the bus from most of our coastal village locations, look out for the Poppit Rocket from May to September.

Parking & Facilities at Poppit

Poppit has a large main car park and an overflow car park in the field during summer. It’s a pay and display car park, it has a couple of electric hook up spots and some disabled parking bays at the front. It has tarmacked roads with gravel parking spaces. There are toilets (male, female & disabled) and outdoor showers, just over the road from the car park, next to the lifeboat station. There are bins in the car park and the beach for dog waste, and water is available by the shower block and the café. The whole area is flat and there’s also ramp access to the beach. There is also ramp access to the café, which sits slightly elevated at the bottom of the car park.

Beach Environment & Safety

Poppit Sands beach is a large sandy beach that stretches out of sight to the right as it wraps around the dunes and up the estuary. Even on it’s busiest days, there is plenty of space for everyone to play games, walk the dog or just relax. It’s very flat so the tide does come in and out quite quickly, you might be best setting up base near the top of the beach. The beach is patrolled by Lifeguards in summer, checkout their Poppit Sands Beach Safety Information and their daily news board by the lifeguard station for any hazards, sea conditions or weather warnings. Always remember to make sure you, your family or friends stay between the flags when going into the sea, and definitely do not enter the river on the estuary side, this can be very fast flowing, and has a very strong pull, even when it looks safe. Check the Poppit tide times before visiting. Poppit Tide Times & Weather.

Fun at the Beach

Poppit is very popular for beach games and water sports. Various sports and exercise clubs use the beach for training, not to mention Poppit’s own Surf Life Saving Club. The RNLI station is always quite busy practising, a couple of surf schools regularly use Poppit and there are always lots of dog walkers about. In the summer there are a few running events held on the beach, feel free to join in if you’re in the area. Other popular activities at Poppit include swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, kite surfing and skim boarding. If you need any surf gear check out Tonnau Surf Shop in Cardigan. If this all sound too energetic, just tuck your self up by the dunes, or even in the dunes and relax in the beautiful surroundings.

Food & Drink at Poppit

Crwst Café is situated right at the front of Poppit car park, and just a stones through from the beach. It’s a dog friendly Café with a small amount of inside seating, but lots of outside seating, it’s more of a “Café come take out”, where people can enjoy Conti’s Ice Cream, brioche doughnuts, organic bread rolls, breakfast rolls, proper coffee and various other freshly made snacks and treats. If you’re looking for a pub or restaurant, the Teifi Waterside Hotel is just 0.5 miles up the road or there’s the Ferry Inn St Dogmaels 1.5 miles away, both are very scenic and serve lunch, bar meals and an evening menu. For even more choice, Cardigan Town has a fabulous selection of Pubs, Cafés, Bars and Restaurants. If you’re looking for a shop, the nearest one is Premier on St Dogmaels High Street, otherwise there’s a Tesco, Aldi, Spar or Premier in Cardigan.

Dog Friendly Beach

Dogs are allowed on the beach all year, and dog waste bins can be found in the car park and at the end of the beach walkway, there are fresh water taps available outside the shower block and the café. The Crwst Café is also dog friendly inside and out, and has dog facilities like tie ups, water and dog treats. Poppit really is a dogs paradise, and it’s very popular all year round with dog walkers.

Pembrokeshire Coast Path

The Pembrokeshire Coast Path officially starts/ends in St Dogmaels, just 1.5 miles up the road, and it runs along the back of Poppit Sands Beach where it travels south down the River Teifi and on towards Camaes Head, or north up the river towards Cardigan. Both directions are sign posted well.

Poppit Sands Beach is a very popular attraction in north Pembrokeshire so it can get very busy in summer, but it can handle it. Visiting out of peak seasons, and even in winter is just as enjoyable, there are plenty of great walks, flat or hilly, and there ‘s always something warm to eat and drink when you return to your car.
