Getting to Cwm yr Eglwys Beach
Cwm yr Eglwys beach is just 1 mile off the main A487 road between Newport and Dinas Cross.
Heading there from Newport - Leave Newport south bound towards Fishguard and after about 2 miles you will see “Cwm yr Eglwys 1 mile” sign posted (if you enter Dinas Cross, you have gone to far), make the turn right and follow the road all the way down to the car park.
From Fishguard - Head north towards Newport and pass through Dinas Cross, after a hundred yards or so you will see “Cwm yr Eglwys 1 mile” sign posted, make the turn left and follow the road all they way down to the car park. Although there is a route down from Dinas Cross, we don’t recommend it as it is extremely steep, narrow and twisty.
If you’re walking from Newport, head down to the Pembrokeshire Coast Path at Parrog and head left along the sea front, just stay on the path until you arrive in Cwm yr Eglwys (3 miles). From Fishguard, head to Lower Town Fishguard and join the coast path, it’s a steep climb out but just stay on the path until you reach Pwllgwaelod (5.5 miles), from here you can either cut straight through to Cwm yr Eglwys along a flat tarmac path (0.75 miles), or continue up and around Dinas Head (2.5 miles). Although the Dinas Head route is longer, on a nice day it offers some breath-taking views, and you may even be lucky enough to see seals in the coves near Pwllgwaelod.
Buses run every hour from Newport and Fishguard, passing through Dinas Cross, you will want to hop off at The Cross, just next to the Cwm yr Eglwys turn. From here it’s a 1 mile walk down the road to the beach.
Parking & Facilities at Cwm yr Eglwys
Cwm yr Eglwys has a small car park with roughly 30-40 spaces, tickets are £3. If the car park is full another option is to drive to Pwllgwaelod car park and take the footpath to Cwm yr Eglwys, however the car park at Pwllgwaelod is similar, if not smaller. The car park is flat and there are toilets on the left hand side after you pass the boat storage yard. There are bins in the car park for general waste and dog waste, and water is available by the toilets. The beach has a 10ft wall right across the back of it, so access to the beach is via the slipway.
Beach Environment & Safety
Cwm yr Eglwys beach is a wonderful sand and shingle cove that’s nestled at the bottom of a valley and sheltered by headlands on both sides. It generally provides a lovely sheltered area to swim and play. However, there are no lifeguards here so please check the tides, weather and beach safety guidelines before visiting. At high tide the beach is almost entirely under water.

Fun at the Beach
Cwm yr Eglwys is a very popular stop for walkers, either for the Dinas Head circular walk, walking to or from Pwllgwaelod before or after a drink in The Old Sailors pub in Pwllgwealod, or walkers passing through on their Pembrokeshire Coast Path journey. There are also lots of dog walkers down to just enjoy time on the beach. Other popular activities at Cwm yr Eglwys include swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing, rock jumping, and rock pooling and crabbing at low tide.
Food & Drink at Cwm yr Eglwys
There is a seasonal ice-cream hut / café which operates from the boat yard car park. They offer a selection of ice-creams, hot and cold drinks, and a selection of snacks. There’s no seating, it is take-away only. If you’re looking for a pub or restaurant, The Old Sailors in Pwllgwaelod is just 0.75 miles away along a lovely footpath that links the two villages, head through the back of the car park and caravan site to the gate where the footpath starts. If you’re looking for a shop, the nearest one is back up in Dinas Cross where you’ll find a shop, garage, pub and chip shop.

Dog Friendly Beach
Dogs are allowed on the beach all year, and dog waste bins can be found near the car park. There are fresh water taps available in the toilet. There are a variety of walks on offer here, and something suitable for all abilities, choose from the flat tarmac footpath, steep roads in and out, coastal path and the beach Poppit really is a dogs paradise, and it’s very popular all year round with dog walkers.
Pembrokeshire Coast Path
The Pembrokeshire Coast Path passes right across the back Cwm yr Eglwys beach, it’s a must stop destination with a very unique feature. In 1859 a big storm destroyed St Brynach’s Church which sat above the beach, now all that remains is one church wall, which stands looking over the beach, it’s very popular photo spot.
Cwm yr Eglwys Beach, like all beaches in Pembrokeshire during Summer, can get very busy, and it can only accommodate small numbers due to the lack of parking. Early mornings, evenings or out of peak season maybe your best option if you want to visit this little gem.
