A Gentle Accessible Walk Along the Estuary

The first section follows a wide, accessible path beside the stunning Newport Estuary. Allow around 20 minutes to reach Parrog, although you'll probably want to stop often to admire the ever-changing views.

The estuary is alive with wildlife throughout the year. Keep an eye out for wading birds, herons and other waterfowl, while runners, families and dog walkers all enjoy sharing this peaceful stretch.

As the path opens out, bear right to join the quiet village road, which leads gently down towards Parrog Beach and the car park outside Newport Boat Club.

Here you'll find:

  • Public toilet facilities

  • Gourmet food trucks (seasonal)

  • Mor Awelon Café, offering eat-in, takeaway and picnic options

  • Plenty of places to sit and watch the activity on the water

This is also where the fully accessible section of the walk comes to an end.

Continue Along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path

If you'd like to extend your walk, continue along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path to the left side of the beach. Although this section is not fully accessible, it is relatively flat and follows the edge of the estuary for around another 10 minutes.

The path curves gently around the shoreline until you reach the old lifeguard station. During low tide, a lot of this section can be walked along the beach, and during high tide, there are high tide routes to ensure you can pass through safely and with dry feet.

Along the way you'll discover several small sheltered coves with crystal-clear water - perfect for a paddle or even a swim on a warm day. It's a wonderfully peaceful stretch of coastline and one of Newport's hidden gems.

The lifeboat station cove is the furthest point of this walk, and after skimming a few stones, we turn here and head back the way we came. From here, continuing along the coast, the path turns a little more rugged, with steep cliff edges around the first headland.

Life on the Estuary

The mouth of the estuary is always bustling with activity. Depending on the tide, you may spot sailing boats, paddleboarders, kayakers and swimmers making the most of the sheltered waters.

If you're planning to launch your own kayak, paddleboard or boat, be sure to check the Newport Parrog Boat Club website for launching information. The concrete slipway is completely tidal, so tide times are essential.

Don't Miss the Sunset

If you're lucky enough to be here in the evening, stay a little longer and experience one of Newport Parrog's spectacular sunsets. As the sun sinks behind Dinas Island, the sky comes alive with rich shades of gold, orange, pink and purple, reflecting across the calm waters of the estuary and the moored boats. It's a wonderfully peaceful way to end the day and one of the most photographed views in Newport, making it well worth lingering for after your walk or evening meal.

Beachcombing & Nearby Beaches

Parrog beach isn't known for long stretches of golden sand, but it is a fantastic place for beachcombing. Look closely and you may discover colourful sea glass, shells and other seaside treasures washed in by the tide.

If you're searching for a classic sandy beach, head across the estuary to Newport Beach beneath Newport Golf Club. Here you'll find a wide expanse of golden sand, a popular beach café, public toilets and an excellent restaurant nearby.

Where to Eat & Drink Along the Way

One of the best things about this walk is that you don't have to venture far for excellent food, coffee or an ice cream. Parrog is home to several fantastic places to stop and soak up the waterfront atmosphere.
