Getting to Mwnt Beach

Mwnt beach is just 5 miles from Cardigan town in south Ceredigion. From Cardigan, head to the school and Cardigan Rugby Club and head out of town on Gwbert Road B4548. The shortest and quickest route is to turn right on Heol Ferwig and stay on that road until you reach the Mwnt turning, however, if you stay on the B4548 and go through Gwbert and Ferwig, you’ll drop down to the estuary and along the cliff tops overlooking Poppit bay, this is a scenic route that is well worth the small amount of extra distance and time. Pass through Ferwig and take the next left sign posted Mwnt. From here you are on single country lanes which can get very busy in Summer. There are pull in places along the route, so just keep an eye out for these and be prepared to reverse. You will pass over a cattle grid as you enter Mwnt and you’ll see the car park on the right. Parking isn’t free, unless you’re a National Trust member, in which case parking is included. Head left out of the car park and head down the path past the toilets and café, then follow the steps that run down along side the steep river / waterfall until you reach the beach.

Parking & Facilities at Mwnt

Mwnt has a good size car park which is part gravel and part grass. Payment is required to park here, but it’s free for NT members. You may find some sheep in the car park, so just be aware when opening the doors with dogs. There are toilets, bins and water by the café. The path to the café is tarmac and doesn’t involve any steps, however the path is moderately steep. The café sits above the beach and is a great spot to enjoy a drink or snack. There is no wheel chair access to the beach, and access to the beach is via a lot of steps.

Beach Environment & Safety

Mwnt beach is a hidden sandy cove surrounded by cliffs and hills on all sides, the land at the back of the beach is clay and does suffer from the occasional land slip during or after extreme weather, but it’s nothing worry about, and only a potential hazard if you sit right at the foot of it. Even on it’s busiest days, there is space for everyone to enjoy. Although it is considered a sheltered cove, it does still get big waves during periods of big swell, and the beach is not patrolled by Lifeguards so please double check the area for any hazards, sea conditions or weather warnings.

The steps down to the beach are quite steep and run along side a steep river/waterfall. There is no handrail so please take care when going up and down.

Things to do at Mwnt

Apart from the beach, Mwnt church (Eglwys y Grog) and the conical hill (Foel y Mwnt) are both well worth visiting. The church is a very simple yet very picturesque white church dating back to the 14th century, and featuring some items from the 12th or 13th century. The church sits above the beach and at the foot of the conical hill of Foel y Mwnt. No visit here is complete without cambering to the very top and enjoying the panoramic views over Cardigan Bay.

Food & Drink at Mwnt

Mwnt Café is a seasonal takeaway only café situated just a short walk from the car park, and set above the beach. A few tables are available to use, otherwise there are plenty of grass areas and walls to sit on and enjoy your food and drink. The café offers hot and cold drinks, ice cream, sandwiches, rolls, pastries and plenty of snacks. It also offers a collection of beach toys, games and essentials. If you’re looking for a pub or restaurant, the Cliff Hotel or Flat Rock Café in Gwbert are the closest, or in the other direction the Ship Inn Aberporth is well worth a visit. Both Gwbert and Aberporth can be walked to along the Wales Coastal Path.

Dog Friendly Beach

Dogs are only allowed on the beach during the off season (1st October to the 30th April). There are fresh water taps available by the toilet block and the café. Mwnt is a great place to visit with dogs, but please be aware of sheep and other nearby cattle in the surrounding fields.

Mwnt Coast Path Walks

The Wales Coast Path runs through Mwnt and both directions are sign posted well. To the north you can head on towards the beautiful seaside village of Aberporth, or heading south, you can walk on towards Gwbert, Cardigan and St Dogmaels in north Pembrokeshire and the stat of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path.
